Born Digital: Microfiction Contest

Deadline: 01.03.2026

What is microfiction?

Tiny stories that pack a mighty punch”Beth Greenberg

Microfiction refers to a very short piece of writing, typically 300 words or less. Microfiction stories have a beginning, middle and end, but they are very compact and concise, so make every word count!

Task

Create an original piece of fiction in no more than 300 words in English on one of the following themes:

  1. AIdentity: Just a single glance and AI knows who you are. Facial identification unlocks devices, approves our transactions and logs us into apps. As we rely more and more on algorithms to recognize, verify and trust each other, the line between human and artificial identity begins to fade. Write a microfiction story that explores this intimate and sometimes unsettling experience of living in a world defined by artificial recognition.

  2. Twitterature: Twitterature is the art of creating short literary works on microblogging platforms (e.g. Bluesky or Twitter). Threads allow readers to respond, reinterpret, and engage, turning a simple story into a shared, collective experience. How do these tiny stories shape our connections, build communities, and connect readers across time – or, conversely, deepen social isolation, disconnection, and alienation? Write a ‘bite-sized’ story that captures this tension. Your piece can embrace either perspective, challenge both, or explore an entirely new angle.
