Alfred Döblin is widely regarded as a central figure of German and European modernism. Nevertheless, his verse production has long remained at the margins of critical discourse, and Manas. Epische Dichtung (1927) has rarely been considered within studies of his conception of the epic. Bringing this work back to the centre of scholarly debate – through an analysis of its formal features, theoretical premises, and its position within the broader context of early twentieth-century literary experimentation – appears essential in order to properly assess Döblin’s response to the crisis of representation and to the transformations of the novelistic form.
Martina Misia is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bergamo and a lecturer at the University of Verona. Her research is characterized by a theoretical and comparative approach and primarily focuses on hybrid literary forms that challenge the traditional genre system.
This lunch lecture is in English. Anyone interested is warmly invited.
