Manley Hopkins 31st International Festival
As part of Jessica Bundschuh’s Excursion Hauptseminar on the Influence of Gerard Manley Hopkins, a group of Anglistik students from the Universität Stuttgart attended the Gerard Manley Hopkins 31st International Festival from July 20th-26th, 2018 in Newbridge, Ireland.
The week was full of exciting events, from the opening reception – where they met Deike Potzel, the German Ambassador to Ireland...

...to the nightly ‘festival club’ of pub recitals over foamy pints of Guinness (ushered in by Lance Pierson, an eminent performer of Hopkins’s work)...

...to a demonstration of Irish dancing from the Galway dancer Tomás O Conghaile...

...to a trip to Gerard Manley Hopkins’s communal Jesuit grave at the Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, the setting for a scene in Joyce’s Ulysses and the last resting place of – aside from Hopkins –important figures in Irish history, like Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera. The warmth that the Newbridge locals extended to the group from Stuttgart, led by the gracious poet Derek Egan, has established a fruitful precedent.
