Since 1993, students have been able to study Italian at the University of Stuttgart, initially under the umbrella of Romance Literatures I, and, shortly afterwards, at the Chair of Romance Literature II/Italian Studies which was founded in 1994 with Prof. Dr. Georg Maag. Despite the small number of staff and the limited financial scope, the Italian Studies Department can look back on a wide range of activities that were presented in July 2014 on the occasion of its 20th anniversary in a ceremony hosted by employees as well as students. On the one hand, the spectrum ranges from a broad-based teaching to the journal HORIZONTE to an editorial office for the Sardinian language and culture, which has existed for years and for a long time was the only editorial office for the Sardinian language worldwide.
On the other hand, the Italian State has established an Italien-Zentrum (Italian Centre) in Stuttgart, in cooperation with the University and under the direction of the Department of Italian Studies. It was inaugurated on November 22, 2007 in the presence of the Italian Ambassador, Dr. Puri Purini, the Italian Consul General, Dr. Faiti Salvadori, the Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg, Günther Oettinger, the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart, Dr. Wolfgang Schuster, and the Rector of the University of Stuttgart, Prof. Dr. Wolfram Ressel. Information on this can be found on the websites of the IZKT and the Italien-Zentrum (IZ). On 22 October 2008, Prof. Dr. Georg Maag was awarded the Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana by the Italian Consul General representing the President of the Republic of Italy for his extraordinary political and intercultural commitment to Italian culture in Germany, the cooperation between the two countries, especially in the field of cultural exchange and Italian Studies.
